Johannesburg Fort

San Francisco, California

The Old Fort and Constitution Hill are definitely worth a visit. The Fort is an Apartheid era prison museum worth the trip on its own. Immediately adjacent is the the amazingly beautiful Constitutional Court Building. An amazing experience that I still think about was a spur of the moment trip to the new Constitutional Court where our guide was Albie... more

Bunny Park

The Bunny Park in Benoni is a landmark in Gauteng. The great thing about it is that admission is free so the whole family can come in for the price of a bunch of carrots. The bunnies run free, one has to watch where one walks, as rabbit burrows are everywhere. The infamous goats are now penned and no longer... more

Akuwaiseni Guest House

Dec 28, 2008

We flew in from Capetown 2008 Boxing Day to a very warm reception by Darwie, Proprietor of the Guest House. If you are looking for a hospitable host with a sense of humour, Darwie is your man. The 2-room facility he offered our party of 3 was very neat and convenient. Breakfast splendid! Nearness to the Melville Main Street is... more

Michelangelo Hotel

Dec 24, 2008

There is no doubt that the Michelangelo has a lot of things going for it. The room was very nice, with a great bath and shower, and very comfortable bed. The location is great - with shopping, restaurants, parking and the best of Sandton right there. The staff is reasonably friendly and attentive - but it is the staff that... more

Holiday Inn Garden Court Johannesburg Eastgate

Dec 24, 2008

We stood there one night only to be close to the airport for the next morning flight. The rooms were a bit shabby and we had to pay a deposit of 300 Rand (means 800 Rand room rate + 300 Rand "for any possible extra services", whatever they meant with this). After dinner we just went out on the parking... more

Intercontinental Hotel Johannesburg O.R. Tambo Airport

3 of 5 stars
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Dec 21, 2008

I chose this hotel for a night's stay between arriving from Cape Town and my return journey to Abu Dhabi. It was great to be able to wheel my trolley straight from the terminal to the hotel. However, there was nobody to take my bags at the front door and took them in myself. I was offered an iced tea... more

African Pride Melrose Arch

Dec 14, 2008

We used this as a stopover to recover from our flight before going on to safari and the hotel was admirably suited for this. A longer stay would be fine too. It is situated in a semi pedestrianised area with a good choice of bars, restaurants and shops. Our room was very spacious and brilliantly designed. It had a large,... more

Protea Hotel Wanderers

Dec 14, 2008

I was part of a Grand Circle Group which stayed at the Wanderers for two nights in November. Our group used 11 of the hotels 229 rooms. On our second day, our group went to Soweto for most of the day. Upon return, 3 of us could not get our electronic safes to open with our pre-set combinations. The management... more

This is the worst hotel. When we checked in , I was told by a young man that, despite my e-mail confirmation from the hotel of our booking (which specified dates), our booking was in fact for the day before our arrival and that they had cancelled our booking without telling us nor refunding any part of the booking. They... more

The Palazzo Montecasino

Dec 12, 2008

The Palazzo Montecasino can be a very relaxing experience. The new Deluxe Room which have direct access to the terrace are very nicely done and the beds very comfortable. For as long as your remember to book a room inside the park, you are sure to have a restful night (the other rooms lead towards the motorway, about 15m away).... more

The Space Guest House

Dec 11, 2008

A great first port of call on our first trip to South Africa. I'm pleased that we chose Melville as a base - the area was great for bars and restaurants (steak at the Melville Grill is brilliant by the way) and the guest house is right at the centre of it all. Very security conscious as everywhere in Jo'burg... more
